De Nieuwe Noorder
The small-scale Noorder Cemetery of 1931, situated along the Noordhollandsch Canal and right in the middle of the remaining polder structure of Amsterdam Noord, evokes a particular intimacy. With sensitivity and respect for the existing buildings, the landscape, and the funeral ritual, Gianni Cito and Herman Zeinstra designed the modernisation of the cemetery and a new crematorium. They decided on an architecture with openness and connection as the central theme of their design.

Openness
The central axis of niches, surrounded by tall trees, extends to the new entrance of the cemetery. Nearby, under the greenery, visitors can park their cars. From there, they reach the reception area via the large pond. This existing building, built in the Amsterdam School style, is the focal point of the new cemetery. Behind it, the ceremony takes place in the transparent auditorium embedded in the second pond. Daylight streams in through the glass in the 7-meter-high roof. The roof stretches into the sky. After the ceremony, the doors of the auditorium open, and attendees guide the coffin to the grave.
Connection
A stately pergola with colonnades and a glass roof links the reception area and auditorium to the adjacent pavilions, which accommodate the crematorium, offices, condolence room, and mortuary. The consistent proportions of the spaces creates a sense of peace. The buildings support the ceremonies, flowing seamlessly from interior to exterior. They create space for solace and cherished memories, which are so vital to the bereaved.
