Jan de Heemstraat

Designing starter homes means working at the cutting edge of design and affordability. They must not only be well-designed but also cost-effective. However, those without wealth must be resourceful. In the end, the housing block comprises 19 high-quality apartments – each one is unique, yet was built for under a hundred thousand per home.

Prefab concrete
The construction system played a key role in the design process. Prefabricated concrete from Heembeton was used, and the relief in the façade was based on the dimensions of the casting plates in the factory. This approach enabled the architects to create a high-quality yet cost-effective complex.

Three-dimensional variation
The eastern façade features a three-dimensional relief. This relief is created through staggered bay windows and loggias, giving each apartment its own unique outdoor area and living space.

To emphasize the relief as much as possible, detailing has been kept to a minimum. The block is constructed using hand-moulded bricks, while the exterior ceilings and terraces are clad in wood.
