Kindergarten Bonheiden

The children grow up in the natural presence of the past. They enter the school via the old town hall and play on the inner courtyard. They learn in the modern, spacious classrooms, and when school is over, their parents wait for them under the ancient trees.

Renewal through preservation
The old town hall of Bonheiden has been repurposed as a distinctive entrance to the kindergarten. The kindergarten itself will be housed in a new building, while the primary school building is preserved. This remarkable ensemble of old and new architecture results in a vibrant, stimulating, and safe environment for the children. The inner courtyard, with its surrounding cloisters, for example, provides a sense of security for the children while they play.

Renewal through innovation
The kindergarten is literally barrier-free and the spaces are flexible. The existing primary school building will be extended with a modest annex, constructed of honest and sustainable materials;  light bricks on the outside and warm wooden panels on the courtyard side. Innovative installation techniques ensure fresh air and a pleasant climate in the classrooms. Mezzanine floors are optional in the three-to-five-meter high classrooms, to create additional space for learning or playing. The windows in the sawtooth roofs and the side windows create beautifully bright spaces.

Old and new greenery
The existing trees will be preserved and new trees will be planted at strategic locations. These ‘green fingers’ connect the distinctive green infrastructure of the municipality with the schools. A convenient kiss-and-go lane will be created beneath the trees at the entrance, allowing parents to safely drop off and pick up their children.
