S2 Kruisvaartkade Utrecht
The Kruisvaartkade is just 500 meters from Utrecht Central Station, directly along the wide, busy railway. This former site of the Dutch Railways is enclosed between the rail yard and the Kruisvaart canal. With sensitivity to this bold, central location, as well as the adjacent small residential neighbourhood, Moke Architecten is undertaking a project here for approximately 160 homes - a metropolitan district on a human scale.

Largest and smallest scale
The location connects two drastically different scales. On one side, there is the railway’s vastness, marked by noise and activity, as large numbers of people rush past the new buildings every day. On the other side, the tranquillity of an old residential neighbourhood is tangible, with its narrow streets, water, and greenery. This contrast creates an island within the development, where a distinct identity and sense of autonomy are essential.
Bold and green
On the railway side, large, bold urban buildings are rising. In contrast, on the other side, welcoming small-scale homes will be built along a waterside path in a park-like setting. The architectural language is raw and archetypal. Parking will be underground.
Healthy Urban living
The inner courtyard between the buildings fosters a sense of intimacy within the neighbourhood. The outdoor space is suitable for relaxing, sports, walking, vegetable gardening, and social gatherings - everything residents want to enjoy in their own community. The façade contains eco-friendly elements such as green terraces and nesting stones, providing shelter for birds.
Sound and Quiet Zones
The railway generates significant noise. All apartments are oriented towards both sides, with the park side offering a quieter environment. Outdoor spaces are positioned on the park side, enhancing the living experience in this peaceful area. The railway side is primarily used for access and circulation.
