South Dock
The NDSM wharf in Amsterdam-Noord is undergoing a transformation from an industrial port area of the past into a modern place to live, work, and recreate. South Dock is located in the loop between the ferry terminal, offices, residences, and a new urban field for recreation on a former shipyard.

New part of town
The block consists of seven interconnected buildings, including an eighteen-story tower. The plinth features shops and live-work units, situated under an arcade. There is parking space on an underground level and beneath a raised deck. The courtyard garden is situated on the deck, along with storage rooms and bicycle parking. From the second floor, you will find approximately 230 apartments of various sizes and types.
Shortcuts
This metropolitan building block is Phase 3 of the Pontkade development. Phases 1 and 2 were designed by Pi de Bruijn of Cie. The boundary between the building blocks is clear, but see-throughs and passageways to the Phase 3 courtyard garden have been created. The staircase gate and the path between the buildings give the courtyard garden an intimate and informal character.
Present and past
The NDSM wharf exudes its industrial past, and that will not change. In the architecture of Phase 3, old themes have been incorporated. The buildings have a readable structure in the façades and use materials such as brick, steel and ceramic. The street name, like old company names, is painted in large letters on one of the walls.
